Behind the scenes at the YPS – then and now

Event Information

Includes views inside the YPS Lodge, St Mary’s Lodge and Manor Cottage

Not all members have a full appreciation of the services currently provided for them at the Lodge. Most of these are arranged by our helpful and efficient clerk, Frances Chambers, but YPS volunteers Bob Hale and Peter Hogarth look after the archives and library, much of which is available to members in the upstairs reading room.

In earlier years, however, the society was a much richer organisation, employing a variable number of staff to run the Yorkshire Museum and Museum Gardens, in addition to organising lectures and other events.

As well as providing an over view of the present-day provision this visit will attempt to sketch the lives of some of the earlier employees of the society, including the most significant figure, John Phillips, and the Baines family – Henry Baines, gardener and sub-curator, and daughter Fanny, who, on Henry’s death persuaded the society to employ her as gatekeeper. We will spend some time in the lodge, where we will have a short tea-break, but will also tour the gardens to look at the various buildings in which these people lived.

If you would like to take part, please complete the booking form and return it with the fee of £5 to the YPS Lodge as soon as you can.
