Looking After York’s City Walls
Dr Louisa Hood, City Walls Manager, City of York Council

Although known generally as Roman or medieval defences, the social, material, economic, and other histories of York’s City Walls are often layered, obscured, or unknown. And whilst the walls are a key aspect of the city’s historic environment and tourist destination credentials, they are also a functioning part of the city’s civic infrastructure and identity. This talk presents the City Walls’ Conservation and Asset Management Plans as well as current and future conservation works. It will focus particularly on the conservation principles guiding how the walls are looked after, and how these help us to integrate the current needs of the walls and its users with its histories.
