Member’s report

The LNE & EM Region alone carries 221million passengers and 58 million tonnes of freight per year. The infrastructure includes over 15,000 different structural assets such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, viaducts and tunnels with an average age of 100 years. Material types range from cast iron, many types of steels, masonry and timber, to modern composites of steel beams and concrete slabs. Managing these is a highly complex operation involving 56 professional staff and collaboration with major universities. The current five-year plan involves a capital spend of £477 million, £177 million in underlying remediation work, and £140 million for maintenance. Case studies included scour under bridges, corrosion of hidden rivets, and incidents involving road vehicles. Of local interest, the refurbishment of York’s Scarborough Bridge required the installation of four new decks at a cost of £6.2 million. Modern self-protecting weathering steel was used to keep the historic outer appearance.
