The potential role of chemical pollution in the mass mortality events on the North East Coast

J. Brett Sallach, Lecturer of Environmental Chemistry, University of York

Last Autumn the mass mortality of shellfish off the North East Coast of the UK made headlines as thousands of dead crabs and lobsters washed onto the shores. Government organisations immediately started preliminary investigations trying to determine the cause of this event that was catastrophic to the local fishing industry. Multiple theories were investigated including chemical pollution as the cause, but others such as algal blooms became the priority for further investigation by the agencies involved. A collaborative group was then established to give a second look into the potential for chemical pollution, namely the industrial chemical pyridine, to be the cause. In this lecture, we will discuss the findings of this investigation and recommendations necessary to insure the safety of the fishing industry in this region.

This event will be held via Zoom.  Invitations will be sent to our mailing list later in January.
