Visit to the Bar Convent

Event Information

Established just outside Micklegate Bar in York in 1686, the Bar Convent is the oldest living convent in England and was established at a time when the Catholic faith was still banned in England.  Mary Ward who was born near Ripon in 1585 was an inspirational pioneer of education for girls and she championed the role of women in the church.   She opened her first school in St Omer in France in 1609 and founded the Order that eventually opened the Bar Convent in York.

A guided tour has been arranged for 2 pm on Tuesday 5th February and this will be followed by an opportunity to visit the Living Heritage Centre Exhibition.  Tea / coffee and cake will be served in the café at the conclusion of the tour.

The cost for the visit will be £14.00 per person which will include the refreshments.

The Bar Convent is well serviced by buses which stop outside the Bar Convent if coming from the city and at the Cinema on the other side of the road if coming from the other direction.

Booking forms should be returned with your payment and a stamped addressed envelope to:Mrs Christine Biglin, Coverdale House, Long Marston, York, YO26 7LN. [01904 738456] by FRIDAY 21st December 2018.
