Dr Liam Herringshaw and Dr Simon Rogerson will lead this walk around the centre of York:
10.30am – Meet at the YPS Lodge, Museum Gardens. After setting fire to a Roman emperor, we’ll take cover from the Battle of the Bowling Green, and find out why slagging off York Art Gallery won’t scoria any points. Blazing a trail through Bootham Bar, we’ll burn brightly past Michael le Belfrey, York Minster, and down Stonegate, erupting onto St Helen’s Square by 11.30, and pausing for a well-earned hot drink.
12pm – Restarting the ignition outside St Martin le Grand on Coney Street, we’ll meet the Frenchman who saved York from burning to the ground, take a Roman bath, and test out the wolf-proof lantern of All Saints Pavement. To finish with a bang, we’ll assess the flammable history of Clifford’s Tower, before extinguishing the fires of Viking industry in the Coppergate centre at 1pm.
