Developing a Human Immune System in a Test Tube: Stories from an on-going Scientific Adventure
Dr Mark Coles
Your body is defended from infections and cancer by its immune system, providing long lived immunity to pathogens. Understanding how the human immune system works is key to the development of new vaccines and novel treatments for disease. We have been working on replicating the complexity of the human immune system in the laboratory. Like with all scientific adventures we have encountered some technical hurdles and made some fascinating unexpected discoveries along the way. I will talk about the technologies we have developed and how the project, the human artificial lymph node has lead us to a better understanding of how tumours undergo metastasis to secondary sites in the body.
Dr Mark Coles is a member of The University of York’s Science and Society Group, which is active and passionate about science outreach to the general public.
