GMP project team and YPS Members’ research visit to Robin Hood’s Bay
In December the intrepid team of Rod and Margaret Leonard together with archaeologist Andrew Jones (Bone) and Paul Thornley.
Rod reports:
Bone, Paul, Margaret, and I went on an expedition to Robin Hoods Bay/ Boggle Hole, and have returned with a heavy rock specimen which we believe to be a hard shale from lias (part of the lower Jurassic deposits). It is now waiting for definitive identification by the Yorkshire Museum curators. Keep your eyes open for future developments on the GMP pages on the website and in the newsletter.
Many thanks to everyone on the trip, which involved driving through thick fog on the North York Moors, paddling through water, and manhandling the specimen up the hill with considerable panache. We recovered and celebrated with a very good late lunch at the Hare and Hounds.
We also discovered that Bone knows about a wonderful story linking real clunch clay, ceramics, Bootham School, the YPS, the Herman Ramm prize, and the ancient Romans. The GMP has potentially spawned yet another side project, which I hope Bone will lead!
