The Clerk in the Country

One advantage of increased hand-washing is being able to spend longer looking out of the kitchen and bathroom windows. A couple of mornings ago I glanced upwards just as a large flock of migrating geese passed over the house, heading north for summer breeding grounds. Only the bird at back right was out of place, making a kink in the magnificent V formation as it disappeared into the distance. In recent days I’ve also seen a heron on its way to a local pond, its folded legs like an undercarriage made from Mechano, two mallards flapping briskly towards the same destination, and higher up a buzzard, riding the thermals in leisurely circles.
