If it stays like this …
During that week in mid-July when the sun never stopped shining, temperatures soared and crops seemed to ripen before our eyes, neighbouring farmers, smiling, serviced their combines and said “Next week” and “It won’t take long … if it stays like this”.
The next week it began to rain. Once golden wheat turned a dull yellow and slumped on battered straw; oil seed rape tangled itself into a sodden mess. Since then harvesting has been a frustrating stop-start process, anxiously watching the weather forecast, assessing how long a crop can be left to dry in the field, dashing out with the combine before the next wave of showers heads in from the west.
Members should by now have received our August newsletter either by post or email. It’s also available here.
(There will be no blog next week because of holiday)
