Harvest continues, part 2 …

As I type, on this sunny afternoon, a large black cloud is moving steadily across a field in view from my window.  Now and then the shape of a combine emerges briefly from it.  The bean crop pictured last week is being harvested.

Beans can be a particularly dusty crop.  Difficult to dry by mechanical means in the store, they have to be left in the field until the plant stems are so brittle that they disintegrate when cut.  In today’s stiff breeze the effect is like billowing smoke.  Alternatively, the combine is on fire.
