Young Scientists’ Research Presentations

February Cafe Scientifique was held with the North Yorkshire Microbiology STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Research Hub (secondary school project supported by The Wellcome Trust).

Four secondary schools took part in the symposium explaining the scientific research they have been undertaking, partly in partnership with industry or academia.

Their projects include Boroughbridge High School students, who working with academics from York University, have been investigating soil samples in their “Antibiotics Unearthed” projects. Fulford School student also investigated the growth of bacteria on soil samples. Students from Ripon Grammar School, have, after visiting the Systagenix Centre for excellence in wound Management in the Yorkshire Dales, been given project briefs to design wound dressings. A group from Malton School has been researching Roman eye medicine in a research project set by Dr Nick Summerton.
