Designer chosen for the Geological Map

We are delighted to announce that we have signed an agreement with Janette Ireland, who makes pebble mosaics, to design and (subject to final confirmation in February) to fabricate our walk-on geological map. As many of you will know, this will represent the Yorkshire section of William Smith’s famous 1815 map, and will be part of the new Garden of Yorkshire Flowers, which will be started next year as part of the extension of Museum Gardens.

The selection process was not easy, as opinions were divided with cogently argued points on both sides, but after much careful thought we eventually chose Janette, who is a very talented designer, and we are sure will be able to create a work of art of which we can all be proud.

With the generous help of many members, we have raised a good part of the money we need to implement this project, but in order to able to make the map the full size we feel would be most effective, a stunning 4mx4m (the same size as the map on the floor of the Atrium in the Yorkshire Museum), we still need to raise a substantial amount more. We hope you will continue to support the project, and that you will be really pleased with the result when the map is finally unveiled in the second half of 2015.

Janette has already visited York to see the place where the map will be installed. During this visit the Yorkshire Museum team were able to show her their own copy of Smith’s map, which has since been sent for renovation, prior to being put on display to celebrate the bicentenary of the map’s publication.
