The game Pokémon Go and face-mingling lenses in Snapchat are examples of augmented reality. As well as developing new forms of entertainment Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are developing into useful tools for designers, scientists and in healthcare. This talk will demonstrate how designers are using these new tools, and give you a chance to try out some of the equipment.

The everyday things we do in the “real world” when working together or designing and building things now has a competitor in the Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) tools that can be used to enhance the creative work of the designer. In this talk we will learn about some of these developments, alongside a demonstration of the difference between VR and AR. Using examples from industry we will discuss these new communication tools and their potential as new learning tools for students both in schools and universities. In future as well as “real world” field trips the software is being developed to take us on “virtual world” tours; but what are the pros and cons of opening up these “new” worlds? Join us at York Café Scientifique on June 7th for this presentation and Q and A.
