Kiplin Hall was the Jacobean country seat of George Calvert, the founder of Maryland, USA. A Gothic wing was added in the 1820s and redesigned in 1887 by WE Nesfield. The Hall is now furnished as a comfortable Victorian House with 17 rooms open to the public. These have an eclectic mix of furniture, paintings, portraits, and personalia, including many Arts & Crafts items. Among numerous original paintings from to 16th – 19th C are works by Beuckelaer, Carlevarijs, Kauffman, and Watts. There are also ornamental gardens, woodland & lakeside walks, and tearoom. See http://www.kiplinhall.co.uk for more details.
Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park is only open for 7 weeks in late spring. It is in a very sheltered, steep-sided valley with ericaceous soil at an elevation of 850 ft, and has more than 1,000 rhododendrons, 250 azaleas and 160 magnolias, as well as many trees and smaller plants. The plants are from around the world, including New Zealand, Mexico, Northern India, Bhutan, Tibet, China, the Himalayas, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Nepal, Chile and Japan. The gardens have many modern sculptures to set off the plants, two small lakes with a pagoda, and a nursery. See http://www.himalayangarden.com for more details.
Please note that some of the paths at the Himalayan Gardens are steep and uneven. There is limited seating for those needing a breather.
