Hull Launch of Anne and John Phillips Geology Prize

Event Information

Includes a tour of the Total Environment Simulator at the Deep

YPS members will be familiar with the achievements of John Phillips, the first Keeper of our museum, who went on to pursue a distinguished career in geology. We have recently learned that his sister Anne, who worked as his assistant, made her own significant contribution to the subject.

The YPS is sponsoring a “John and Anne Phillips Prize” for the best final year undergraduate geology mapping dissertation at the University of Hull. YPS members have been invited the the launch event for this prize, which is being hosted by the university on Thursday 14 April. YPS members will be able to see the geology department, including impressive pilot facilities for showing the effects of river erosion.

We will see the world class pilot plant- the Total EnvironmeDeep imagent Simulator (TES) – housed at The Deep– . This consists of a large flume tank in which the movement of water is controlled above, below and within sediment beds, generating waves, rainfall and water flows. The TES has state-of-the-art high-resolution monitoring equipment to measure processes, rates of process, and the shapes of evolving landforms. For more information see:- http://www2.hull.ac.uk/science/gees/research/total%20environment%20simulator/facilities.aspx

Transport will be by private car unless the take-up is unexpectedly high, in which case a small coach may  be used. Details and costs are still being finalised, but the revised draft itinerary is
