Event Information

The YPS Geology Group invites all YPS members to join the following tour, which will be led by Paul Hildreth, of the Yorkshire Geology Group. A flyer giving further details will be issued in the next newsletter.

10.30 Meet at North Lincolnshire Museum, Scunthorpe. DN15 7BD. Tour around the outside of the museum (weather permitting).

10.45 Tour of the museum galleries – During the summer of 2017 the museum opened a brand new Jurassic Sea gallery and a new Steel Town gallery

11.30 Illustrated talk on the Frodingham Ironstone “The Rock that built Scunthorpe”

12.30 Transfer to Conesby Quarry to look at the ironstone in situ and collect fossils.

This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. – one of the last remaining exposures of Frodingham Ironstone and has yielded the richest known faunas from that unit. Bivalves are abundant and well preserved echinoderms also occur. Of particular international importance however, are the well preserved ammonite faunas ….
