The President’s Evening

We have pleasure in inviting you to the Churchill Hotel on 30^th October for the one formal occasion in our calendar when we will be marking the end of an era with the presentation of a gift to our retiring President, Dr Peter Addyman during an evening of good food and good company.

One of the first tasks for our new President, Professor Jim Matthew, has been to invite our principal guest, Professor Sarah Thompson, MBE.  Sarah originally came to York to carry out research on magnetic materials of relevance to storage of information in computers, and is now head of the Physics Department, her managerial skills being recognized at a time of unprecedented expansion.

In parallel to a distinguished research and teaching career she has put huge effort into the public understanding of science by the young all the way through to the retired. Her contribution to science in its broadest sense has been rightly recognised in the award of a MBE in the New Year Honours list of 2012/2013 … and her reputation as a speaker goes before her.
