Event Information

All members are invited to attend this reception, and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink, before the lecture on October 1st. The event will be hosted by The Nuffield Foundation in partnership with NYBEP/STEMNET. This collaboration creates opportunities to inspire young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Tonight’s reception follows the success of the similar event in 2012. It will provide an opportunity for a group of Yorkshire sixth formers to display the posters they have made, describing the research they undertook on summer Nuffield placements. After we have had the opportunity to read the posters and discuss them with the young people,we will move through into the lecture hall, for a short ceremony before the start of the lecture, during which they will be presented with awards recognising their achievements.

Do come along, read the posters, and encourage the scientists of the future.

Report

The now regular Nuffield/STEMNET award ceremony was held for the sixth-formers from local schools who had taken part in research placements in various institutions dealing with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. An exhibition of posters describing their experiences over the year occupied the Museum atrium and the winners were presented with certificates by Professor Jim Matthew, President of the YPS and Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University Of York. He noted that this was the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of his own research career and his introductory speech was illustrated with scientific cartoons which made humorous but apt points about how to conduct scientific research, such as: design your experiment appropriately, check your data against other sources, apply a reality check to mathematical models, and in Richard Feynman’s words “take pleasure in finding things out”.
