Event Information

Follow in the footsteps of John Robert Mortimer (1825-1911), the Father of Wolds Archaeology

Meet at 1pm at Fimber Village Hall YO25 9LX

Cost £9pp which includes the YPS administration charge, a donation to FFWAP, and Hall hire with tea/coffee.

Travel by private car to Fimber, about 25 miles from York. Cars can be parked on the Village Green. There are bathrooms in the Village Hall, which will act as our meeting point and base. There should be opportunities for car sharing, and it is hoped to provide some limited 4×4 transport along the walk for those who would otherwise find it too strenuous.
The visit starts at Fimber Village Hall at 1300 hrs with a short introductory talk by Alison Spencer of the Fridaythorpe, Fimber and Wetwang Archaeology Project. Alison gave demonstrations of her geophysical surveying techniques during the 2018 YPS visit to the Hanging Grimston dig, and the YPS has previously supported her work with a small grant.
The walk itself is about 3 miles long and takes in some of the key archaeological sites investigated by Mortimer eg the earthworks in Wandale and Bigdale.  The route is mainly over a rough grassy surface with 2 short, steep climbs: stout footwear and walking poles are recommended. Please also bring suitable wet gear in case the weather is bad – we will only cancel if the weather is awful.
The local farmer, Andrew Baxter, has very generously offered to provide transport between the archaeological sites in his 4×4 vehicle for up to 4 people who would appreciate some help. If any participants have a 4×4 with a high wheel base they would offer in support, it would be much appreciated.
On our return to the Village Hall, we will have tea/coffee and the opportunity to ask questions.
Note- as an optional extra at a small extra charge, there may be the opportunity to visit interesting attractions at nearby Wetwang and/or Thixendale in the morning. Please indicate below if you are interested, and I will send you details as they become available.

Note that YPS Activities booking terms and conditions will apply. These can be seen at the Lodge or online.
