Geological map – Yorkshire Rocks moved in place

YPS  members will recall that when we unveiled the stunning mosaic in Museum Gardens, representing the Yorkshire section of William Smith’s 1815 map, we promised to put samples of the real rocks in the flower borders nearby. This has taken far longer than we hoped, but garden visitors will have noticed a recent flurry of activity in that area. Space in the borders has been prepared, and on Friday and Saturday, building contractor Dave Wilson, with a little help from Rod Leonard, laid a concrete base for the mosaic strips which will link the rocks with the pebbles in the map, and put down a gravel base for the rock samples. This was followed on Tuesday by further work by the garden staff and Rod, moving the rock samples into place. Meanwhile Rod and his wife Margaret have been making plinths for the clay specimens, which have been fired into creative ceramics by ‘Potter Man’ Lee Steele. These will be positioned in a couple of weeks, while designer Janette Ireland will return on April 10th to put the pebble strips in place.
