A Day of Archaeology and Geology in Hull

Event Information

John and Anne Phillips’ Lecture and Visit to Hull and East Riding Museum

The John and Anne Phillips’ Undergraduate Mapping Prize at the University of Hull is sponsored by The Yorkshire Philosophical Society. The University commissions a lecture on the topic of geological mapping followed by a reception and opportunity to view student mapping displays. Later in July, there is a YPS event at the Yorkshire Museum with presentation of prizes and a geologically themed lecture.

Prof Kathy Cashman FRS (University of Bristol) will give the John and Anne Phillips Lecture in Robert Blackburn Lecture Theatre A, University of Hull, at 3pm on Thursday March 5th, on Mapping Hawaiian Volcanoes. The reception and viewing of the displays will follow in the Map Room of the Cohen Building nearby.

To complement this and to build on the interest generated by Dr Peter Halkon’s recent YPS lecture on ‘The Later Prehistoric Landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds’, The YPS is planning a day in Hull of archaeology and geology.

Peter Halkon has agreed to escort a YPS group on a tour of the Archaeological Section of the Hull and East Riding Museum in the morning. The Museum holds a very wide range of artefacts and displays from the Yorkshire Wolds. Afterwards, lunch may be taken nearby and then move to the University for the Mapping Lecture.
