Archaeology Field Trip to Hanging Grimstone

Event Information

COST £6 pp includes YPS admin costs + donation to the dig.

YPS member Trevor Pearson will give us an Insider view of an archaeological dig on a medieval village.

Transport will be by car, meeting at 1200 hrs for lunch at own cost in the very well reviewed Jolly Farmers Inn at Leavening, 16 miles NW of York. We will then share cars if necessary for parking, and drive to Hanging Grimston, 5 miles to the SE. We will first have a tour and description of the dig, and the opportunity to view the finds. YPS member Trevor Pearson will then show us a geophysical survey and give us an expert demonstration of how modern archaeologists use GPS surveying techniques to map a site with an accuracy of 1 to 2 cms.

There are Neolithic, Iron Age, and Romano – British sites in the area, and we may have the opportunity to view some of these as well.

Background     The earthworks of the medieval village of Hanging Grimston, which lie on the western scarp edge of the Yorkshire Wolds close to Kirby Underdale and Wharram Percy, overlie earlier Iron Age and Romano-British settlement remains. Three seasons of excavation have so far been undertaken as part of the Hanging Grimston Community Archaeology Project, a joint venture by members and friends of the High Wolds Heritage Group (HWHG) and the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society (SAHS). The excavation is directed in his spare time by Marcus Jecock of Historic England. All other participants are volunteers.

The principal aim of the excavation  is to test, mainly through excavation, ideas derived from recent earthwork and geophysical surveys about the nature and development of settlement at the site, eg pre-village occupation; dates of village foundation and desertion; nature and sequence of house rows within the settlement; verification of large earthwork enclosure as manorial; post-desertion history. Summaries of the results of the 2015 and 2016 excavations have been published in the Council for British Archaeology Yorkshire Group (CBA Yorkshire) annual publication, CBA Forum (Jecock et al 2015; 2016).

The tour is at your own risk, and YPS terms and conditions apply. Ask at the Lodge, or see the website https://www.ypsyork.org/groups/social-group/yps-activities-booking-terms-conditions-2/
