Don’t go with the flow: 3D microscopy to explore the world of bacteria on surfaces

Nicola Farthing

Many bacterial species are able to attach themselves to surfaces. On these surfaces they they then multiply and produce ‘slime’ to become a structure called a biofilm. These biofilms are ubiquitous and can impact our everyday lives in both positive and negative ways. We used 3D microscopy and mathematical models to investigate how the bacteria’s ability to swim aids them in sticking to the surface and forming biofilms. This increased understanding of their formation may help us to develop surfaces that either promote or prevent biofilms.
