Can wildlife escape rapid climate change?

Dr Andy Suggitt, Department of Biology, University of York

As the world warms up, plants and animals are increasingly exposed to intolerable temperatures in their native habitats. Based on our current progress on reducing emissions, climate change threatens around one in six species with extinction. But for some species the story may not end there. The latest research indicates that cooler, more variable parts of the landscape may help to ‘buffer’ wildlife from the worst effects of warming, improving their chances of survival. This talk will discuss how many species might benefit from these vital ‘refugia’ from climate change, and will assess the what the prospects might be for our native flora and fauna as we enter a period of warming unprecedented in the modern era.
