Day Trip to Thorp Perrow, Snape Chapel, and Mount Grace Priory

Event Information

Thursday 3 May 2018, £38 pp

The main visit will be to Thorp Perrow Arboretum, where we will have a guided tour by the curator, and some free time. For experts, a catalogue of all the tree specimens will be available on the coach. We will have a discounted group menu for lunch in the tearoom, but the cost (£5 to £8 not including tea/coffee) is optional and not included in the tour cost.

An interesting contrast will be the Carthusian Mount Grace Priory (free entry for EH/NT members). The gardens have been transformed over the winter, led by award winning gardener Chris Beardshaw. The Upper and Lower Terraces, and the Dell Garden, have all been renovated to enhance their Arts and Crafts style. The monk’s garden has been replanted, guided by recent research into how the monks would have used this multi-functioning space.

We will also have a brief visit to the remarkable 15thC Snape Castle Chapel. This was once owned by Richard III, and has strong associations with Katherine Parr and the Neville & Cecil families. The Chapel has fine wood carvings, and damaged frescos by Antonio Verrio. The Snape Local History Group has kindly agreed to provide an expert guide.

The cost includes entry and tour at Thorp Perrow, donations to the Chapel and YPS, coach travel, and gratuities.
