The survivability onion: how to stay alive in the 21st century
Dr David Wilkes, Research Acquisition Organisation, Ministry of Defence

This lecture was an astute and sometimes disturbing analysis of the problems that face those responsible for equipping service personnel. The political and technical factors influencing change and the changing nature of threats imply unpredictable and asymmetric demands. Moving from an industrial to an information age means that commercial technologies for defence and aggression may be available on the internet more readily than by traditional means and may have very short periods of effectiveness.

The “onion” in the lecture’s title implied technological development ensuring that attackers and defenders avoid successively being: seen; targetted; hit; penetrated; killed.

The questions after the lecture reinforced the audience’s appreciation of the difficulties faced by personnel in modern warfare.
