Nanoscience and nanotechnology exploit the properties of materials and devices that exist on the scale of a few nanometers, ie. about a billionth of a metre, typically involving only 100-1000 atoms.
The characterisation and manipulation of such materials requires highly sophisticated electron microscopes.
The University of York in conjunction with JEOL, the major Japanese electron microscope manufacturer, has set up the York JEOL Nanocentre with a suite of state of the art instuments which YPS have the opportunity to see in action in visit lasting one to one and a half hours.
