Visit to Louth and the Yorkshire Wolds. Thursday 23rd April 2026.
Our visit in Louth, known as the Capital of the Wolds, begins with time for coffee followed by a guided tour of St James Church, Louth, famous for the tallest spire in Britain. Described by Simon Jenkins as “The most perfect Perpendicular spire in England”.
Free time follows to visit the small Louth Museum (£4 concessions), which was founded by Louth Naturalists, Antiquarian and Literary Society. Alternatively enjoy a walk around the Georgian architecture, visit the Lincolnshire Cheese shop, or explore one of the many cafes/pubs for lunch (at own cost).
At 1pm we rejoin our coach to travel to Tattershall Castle (NT) (£11 fee for non-members not included). Tattershall Castle rises proudly from the Lincolnshire fens, a striking addition to the otherwise flat landscape. Built by Lord Ralph Cromwell, the Treasurer of England, Tattershall Castle was designed to show off his wealth, position and power. Built of brick, in an era of stone, this fortified manor is one of the earliest and the finest surviving examples of medieval brickwork. Inside, the opulent interiors were also designed to impress. Huge Gothic fireplaces, elaborate tapestries and church-like windows feature throughout, showcasing Lord Cromwell’s privilege. There are six floors with wide steps and integrated bannisters but participants can just visit the parlour floor or climb a bit further.
Our final visit is to the Joseph Banks Centre in Horncastle where we will visit the Museum and Garden. The Society’s Patron Sir David Attenborough once described Joseph Banks as “That great Panjandrum of British Science”. The volunteers here will provide a drink and cake as we discover more about this famous plant hunter.
The £36 fee includes coach travel, driver gratuity, donation and cake etc at the Joseph Banks Centre. The Ingleby’s coach will leave from York Memorial Gardens, YO26 4ZF, at 8.30am, leaving Horncastle at 4.45pm approximately for the return journey. Lunch is not included; there are several Cafés/Pubs in Louth and a picnic area at Tattershall Castle.
