Blood vessels: it’s what’s on the inside that counts!
Dr Adam Odell, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science, Disease Detection and Prevention (DDaP) Group, School of Science, Technology, and Health, York St John University, York, UK, YO31 7EX.
Your blood vessels are not just a simple network of pipes moving blood around your body – they are much more sophisticated than that! Although they carry oxygen, deliver energy, and remove waste (amongst other things), it is the internal lining of your blood vessels, the endothelium, that is the true unsung hero of the story. Join Dr Adam Odell, on a fascinating journey into the world of endothelial cells, those flat (and rather visually unremarkable) cells that form an almost continuous protective sheet on the inside of all blood and lymphatic vessels. Dr Odell will explore how these specialised cells control everything from blood pressure to inflammation and explain what happens to them as we age and succumb to disease. Finally, he will pose the question of whether we should all be doing more to help our endothelial cells out and to make their job easier.
