Building Stones of York Tour

Event Information

Walking Tour of York organised by the YPS Geology Group

For many centuries, York’s builders have used stones from outside the city. As methods of transport improved, the availability of different materials increased, and the geological variety has multiplied.

This tour, led by Paul Hildreth of the Yorkshire Geological Society, begins in Exhibition Square, and explains the origins of many of the church walls, shop fronts, banks and many other features which we regularly walk past.

See igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks in a new context, and recognise fossils in unexpected settings!

To register for this tour, email Paul Thornley at ypsgeology@gmail.com or send him your contact details via the Lodge. There will be a £3 admin charge (pay on the day)
