Event Information

As you will probably know, after years of hard work, the members of Holgate Mill Preservation Society finally mounted the sails last year. The mill is now working, and looks splendid. Built in 1770, it was grinding corn until about 1933. It is a Grade II listed building and is a very rare type of windmill as it has five sails, a fantail and is also double shuttered. It is the last surviving mill in York and one of only two in all of Yorkshire.

We have arranged for a group from YPS to have our own conducted tour of the mill in the harvest season. You should note that there is no disabled access, and to reach the top you will need to be able to climb ladders. The very informative website http://www.holgatewindmill.org/ will give you some idea of what is involved.

Our tour of the mill starts at 2pm, but to make your day even more enjoyable, those who wish can lunch beforehand (at 12 noon) at the nearby Red Lion, Knapton. Run by Annie Prescott, ex head chef of Meltons, this highly recommended ‘quintessential English bistro’ offers excellent food at very reasonable prices.

*Members will travel to the mill in their own transport. (We will give information on where to park later.) If you do not have your own transport we should be able to arrange lifts with other members.  Alternatively, for those not taking lunch, Bus No. 1 runs from the Station to Holgate every 10 mins.

The Yorkshire Philosophical Society accepts no responsibility for any loss or injury suffered while taking part in one of its visits. Participants are recommended to take out appropriate insurance cover.
