YPS Tour to the Lake District

This 4 days, 3 nights stay with three course, three choice dinner and full English breakfast is based at The Riverside Hotel, Kendal conveniently located in the centre of Kendal.  The hotel is in a converted Tannery situated on the banks of the River Kent and free wifi and free use of the Leisure Club are included.

Cost from £599 per person (sharing) to include three dinners, three breakfasts, one lunch, return travel by executive coach, and visits with guides as shown in the Itinerary*.  Single occupancy supplement: £90.   YPS administration fee: £25 per person (to cover gratuities and other expenses).  Optional insurance: £18 per person.

Itinerary

Day 1: York to Carlisle, then Wreay village and then to Kendal

0830 Depart York Memorial Gardens and cross the Pennines towards Carlisle for a visit to the Tullie Museum where we have a curator led tour and lunch (included in Tour cost). From here we proceed to the village of Wreay for a guided tour of St Mary’s Church followed by a visit to Sarah Losh Heritage Centre. We continue to our hotel in Kendal with time to settle into rooms before dinner.

Day 2: Steam Yacht Gondola/Brantwood/Ruskin Museum

Depart hotel and travel to Coniston Pier to board the National Trust Steam Yacht Gondola which takes us across the lake to Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin set in 250 acres with beautiful gardens.  Visit includes introductory talk followed by self guided tour. Return to Conniston Pier by the Coniston Launch where lunch can be taken, followed by a visit to the Ruskin Museum.

Day 3: Lake Windermere, Jetty Museum & Blackwell Arts & Crafts House

Today we travel to Lake Windermere, England’s largest natural lake. We spend the morning at the Windermere Jetty Museum where optional lake cruises are available.  In the afternoon we visit Blackwell, a timeless Arts & Crafts house where we have time to look around before returning to our hotel.

Day 4: Kendal/Dalmain House & Gardens/Penrith/York

Depart hotel after breakfast and travel to Penrith for a visit to Dalemain House, a historic mansion, set in beautiful gardens in the heart of the Lake District National Park.  Entry and tea/coffee is included in the tour cost. From here we travel to Penrith, where we take lunch (not included), before resuming our journey back to York, arriving at Memorial Gardens in the early evening.

How to book

Print out and complete the booking form, insurance form and specific requirements form.  Even if you do not require the Just for Groups insurance, please indicate this on the insurance form and return it with your booking.  Paper copies of the forms are available at lectures or from the Lodge.

Travel insurance

2025 – 2026 UKHG Insurance Policy

Please return the forms to Catherine Brophy, Yorkshire Philosophical Society, The Lodge, Museum Gardens, York, YO1 7DR, together with two cheques as follows:

·       Deposit cheque (£60 per person plus £18 per person if Just for Groups insurance is required – made payable to Just for Groups)

·       YPS administration cheque (£25 per person – made payable to Yorkshire Philosophical Society)

These cheques will not be banked until we know the tour has the viable number of participants.

Closing date for bookings: 30 May 2026

If the tour attracts enough participants to be viable, balance payments will be due 8 weeks before departure.
